GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE

Image

AUGUST 31, 2002

I've had a lot of people write in asking about the Hayward park so I thought I'd run up and get some photos for you. I've been there before and I think it's great. Free, outdoors and all concrete. It was built in honor of a local skater who died. I think he died in a snowmobile accident but I'm not positive. Anyway, the town got together and raised enough money to build a park in his name.

There is some strange shit at this park. As you can see from the photos it was a cloudy day so there wasn't anyone there. I actually like that about it too. Never too crowded and the Hayward locals I've met have been super nice. Wisconsin is god's country. You can still burn stuff in your back yard, shoot guns, drink and drive, bars close at 2, strippers give totally naked lap dances, you can buy beer on Sundays, and they have no 'tear' system for their parks. If you've ever wondered why Minnesota's city parks are so fucking tiny it's because some dipshit decided that if it's 3 feet or under it's more safe. There may be truth to that but I know damn well that I get more hurt on those little parks than anywhere.

There's a cement half pipe that's bowled off on the ends. It's partially in the ground so the ends bring it back level. It's fun to launch out of the thing. There's a flat bank behind it you can hit or if you angle it right you can come out the side. There's a vert spine that's about two feet tall. It sounds shitty but it's really fun. If you can do anything on it it's an accomplishment. Lots of banks and rails. Kinda steep but fun. It's different than pretty much any park you'll go to which makes it interesting. I'm not sure if it's a reason in itself to drive up to Hayward but put it together with my previous argument and you have no reason not to go. They're planning on expanding the park with what looks like some great ideas. There's a casino there too. I might just move…
