GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE

gravityheader2005.jpg
So last week it was Woodward and this week it's FDR. Both for the Gravity Games. This time I brought my camera. The trip started with a Monday morning flight to Philadelphia. I got there earlier than the rest of the crew so I had some time to walk around and get to know the city a bit. I really like it there. It's kinda dirty but the people were great. I got all set up at the hotel and ended up sitting around waiting for a shuttle to the park with Omar Hassan and Andre Genovesi. I've met Omar before but didn't know anything about Andre other than he was riding a Nesser deck. Finally the bus came and we were the only ones on it. Well, Lutzka asked us to hold it for him but the bus driver had other ideas. We got to FDR and it was all pimped out with TV cameras and lights and everything. It's a cool park but looked hard to skate. There were an assload of people flying around so I just decided to sit and watch. I tried getting in a headed session at Burnside years ago and nearly killed myself.

SHITTY CLIP OF CHRIS COLE

The plan for the following Tuesday was to have a 'natural street' contest in front of the Wachovia Center (where the 76ers play) that included a nice 8 stair rail with two best trick sections included within the contest. We got down to the spot and there was pretty much nothing set up. It seemed a little strange because the contest was that day. So we basically just moved some benches, added a picnic table and let them have at it. Getz showed up, took a look at the course and jumped back in his brand new Hummer and took off. The skaters in the contest were Mike Peterson, Kyle Berard, Avi Luzia, Pete Eldridge, Kevin Taylor, Josh Evin, Dayne Brummet, Wagner Ramos, Johnny Layton, Andre Genovesi, Billy Marks, Lutzka and Chris Cole.

So they all show up and start practice. Shrewgy (the contest coordinator) came up to me with a walkie-talkie and told me my job was once the contest started I had to keep all the skaters down at one end and make sure they all go one at a time in order. I told him that they wouldn't listen to me but Shrewgy said they needed to do it that way for TV and the judges and everything. So the contest starts and the first time through it went just fine. By the second time the guys were getting a little irritated with me holding them all back and babysitting and to be honest I felt like a complete retard telling them what to do at all. So Billy Marks comes up and asks me what I'm going to do if he goes out of order. I just looked at him and said 'nothing'. So off he goes. Then Cole went, then Avi, then Wagner and so on all at once. I lost all control. But it turned out better because they started making tricks and a nice flow came out of it. I still felt like a dick though.

Then the second part of the street contest started that was pretty much a jam on the rail. I'd first like to say that Chris Cole may be the best skater out there right now. He seriously could have filmed a video part in the hour long contest. He makes everything look really, realy easy. He did win the contest but Andre Genovesi took home the most money. He won both best trick contests and got 3rd overall. His best tricks were a perfect switch backside tailslide on the top of the picnic table and he switch flip 50-50ed the rail. He's really good. Wagner got 2nd in the street contest. He was killing it too.

Then we moved over to the FDR park for the 'park' section of the contest. There was a totally different group of dudes with the exception of Lutzka, Berard and a few others. Rune was there, Bam was there, Ben Schroder and many more. Bam was having an after party so I asked Muldoon if he wanted to go and he says to me, 'what are you, 12?'. That was pretty funny. Lutzka was ripping in practice but missed the cut. Kyle killed it and ended up in 2nd place. Omar destroyed the park. He had the contest won after his second run so in his third run he tried a padless 540 on the vert wall and ate shit. But it didn't matter. Benji Galloway ended up 3rd. This is getting long so if I'm cutting it off kthanksbye.
