GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE

Interview by rhino
Matt, how were the Xgames this year?
The Xgames are just a showpiece, a long commercial if you will. They highlight certain skaters that they have vested interest in
i.e.; employees of espn. They suck!!! I couldn't get to a particular section of the stands (to see my family) because I didn't have the proper I.D. I had what they gave me (athletes are second there).
I hear you made a hand drawn t-shirt, what did it say?
My shirt read:
E treme $ P rofit N etwork
-who profits?
I know you placed first in the best trick contest, but was there some controversy?
Basically, the problem was the officials said time was up, but they kept extending time for some reason (maybe Tony didn't make the 900 vert yet). For whatever reason, there was no official time called so I kept going. Then I broke my front truck, borrowed Bucky's board-then made it. They didn't like the fact that I called them out on their lack of equality for the other skaters at the GAME. I guess I hurt their plan.
Has this happened before in previous Xgames best tricks?
It's happened before, but the person who it happened to didn't complain. It took Tony almost an hour to make the first 900 a couple of years ago. Colin destroyed that best trick and didn't get squat. That sucks!!!
What do you think was the reason for extending the time limit?
So, Bob would seemingly win, Tony eventually makes a 900-crowd goes wild, Tony wins again and Bob gets second. GOOD SCRIPT!!! What drama, what edge of your seat programming!!! What a perfect way to promote Bob's new espn game and Tony's existing game and endorsements of espn.
How much loot did you take home for 1st place?
$11,000, and you know they didn't like that. What do they know about us-NOTHING, they just want to maintain paying us less than 3% of their profit.
Do you think the format will be changed for next year?
Maybe, I will not be there. I see some sort of weak compromise to working with the skaters. If they do something good, then what I did hopefully lit a spark under their asses.
Have seen the new 411 video mag.? You have the opener and it's from the Xgames best trick?
I haven't seen it yet; I guess I should go check it out?
Whats going on with your board sponsor- Falken? I hear they ran out of gas?
KERPLUNK

Any line on new board sponsors?
A few, but I'm waiting on legitimacy. I like the reptiles, but not the people fronting on being them.
With all the terrorism and the new plane that went down in NYC, is that putting a halt to any traveling plans, or are you not worried about that?
I took a few off. That was scary!!! But I'm over it now, now I'm pissed that the "HASEN BEEN LAIDIN" years affected my day to day. I hope he suffers.
What tricks are you working on at the moment?
I'm working on tons of new stuff. I kind of go back and forth on tricks, so it doesn't get boring. Because contest lines are boring. Sometimes I feel like a hamster on a wheel. Come on, contests are great sometimes, but the truth is (kiddies) they are about income. That's the only reason most pro's enter them. To pay the bills.
Where have you been skating and who do you like to skate with?
I skate Volcom warehouse most of the time (it's the best) and depending on what my friends are skating- Encinitas (sucks) and Mission Valley. Partners in crime: Mike Crum, Dennis Martin, Darren Navarette, Remy, Bucky, Jake Brown, The Fritsch, Gentry, and anybody else that can laugh and skate at the same time. Home (back east) sessions include: Derek Krasauskas, Gona "Ray" a, Cabbage, Joe Joe, Pee Wee, and all the brown boys from VA beach. If you don't know the last (east) people I've mentioned, that's O.K-they dont care!!!
Any big plans or what do you have upcoming and are looking forward to in 2002?
Keep it all fresh and innovative. That keeps me busy.
What's up with the new breed of vert skaters up? I hear there were some young kids charging the vert ramp at the Volcom contest a few weeks ago.
Vert doubters be warned (what comes around, goes around). Truly inspiring little shits: Rob, Sean, Allen, Ruda-amounst others are all nipping at the staple heels.
And would you rather recommend a reptile or a dog for a pet and why?
It totally depends on what you have time and space for. Personally, I find reptiles sort of hard to read-misunderstood and enigmatic. That is the challenge I enjoy and why I like to work with them. Dogs and cats are a ton of responsibility, not only with time, but also with companionship (I don't have the time to keep them). I do have enough time to maintain a small collection of reptiles. Its kind of more along the lines of study (science). You have to read tons to keep reptiles and each type may have seriously individual needs. Don't just get inspired to buy impulsively. You could end up with a serious headache. Here's a good list of reptiles to start with if you are interested in keeping them:
Bearded dragons (like dog lizards)-tame!!!
Leopard gecko's (same)
Any captive bed Colubrid snakes (King, Rats, Corn)-pick up a book first!
Sponsors: AERA shoes, S One , Dragon, and Volcom.
