GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE

Antiques Road Show

BY BRIAN PERRY

I've collected a lot of skate stuff over the years. It started with stickers but I'd stick them on the wall of my bedroom in my parents house. I've always been more interested in local stuff so I try to get my friends decks or local company stuff. I was pissed that I was too stupid to save any of LeRoux's decks, or Muldoon's or Nav's old ones so I'm slowly collecting now. First runs of decks or any originals I get off on.

inchrootshosoi.jpg
(left) Justin Lynch's first pro model. This is the Alva deck before they started New School. (center) This is my favorite deck. The Roots 'Giving Tree' board. I wish I had more of Todd's shit. (right) Krooked Hosoi.

nessergonz.jpg
(left) Max Dufour, Premium. I was going to skate this deck but it never got off the wall. (center) This is Nesser's first pro model with Bratrud graphics. Wayne Zerr screened all these decks in the back of Fobia. All these first run boards had a slight flaw in the blade. Wayne was pissed about it but I think it makes it more unique. (right) This deck was part of a huge canvas that Gonz painted. It was then taken apart and sold piece by piece. I got it on Ebay and paid too much for it.

nesseroluhawk.jpg
(left) Nesser's other first run deck. George graphics. Just a cool deck. (center) Emeric Pratt - Iota. I never got Olu's first deck (the elephant one) but I did get a t-shirt of it. This one is nice too. (right) I guess I just figured that if you're going to collect decks you may as well have one of these.

clintstereo.jpg
(left) Clint's first board. I was very proud of the kid when this came out. He's got this airplane tattooed on his hip and it makes for an excellent graphic. (center/right) Stereo first runs. Dooner got these down at Cal-Surf and called me about it. They're numbered and signed. The left one is Dune's and the right one is Lee's.

fonixiota.jpg
(left) Fonix first run. Jack Boyd hooked me up with this deck. Another one I was going to skate but I liked the graphics too much so on the wall it went. (center) I've got a cat named Lopez so I collect as much Lopez shit as I can. (right) This is one of the four original Iota boards. They made the fish series and this Minneapolis one.

thurman.jpg

(left) Thurman Lewis. Rad graphics on this deck. Plus I like that kinda vomit color. (right) This deck was thrown away because it's a little warped. I basically took it out of the trash and brought it home.

signedcharlie.jpg

(left) This was a deck I grabbed at the 3rd Lair's grand re-opening party. I had as many old heads as I could find sign it. It was just an impulse at the time but it's one of my favorite's now. Click here for a write up of the event and to see the list of names if you're interested. (right) This is a Charlie Kraft original. He did this board for a skate shop and I think he said they only made 40 of them. He's my favorite local artist. I have some of his paintings. See below.

Charlie Kraft paintings.

grindmags.jpg
(left) This is some stuff I got from the Grind people. I interviewed a couple of the actors for an article in City Pages. They signed shirts and all this shit. That movie was so fucking dumb. (right) I built special shelves for skate magazines in my house. I've got most from about 86 on up.

toys.jpg
Something about these action figures cracks me up. I've got an old Danny Way one that Chris Teigen gave me for Christmas like 5 years ago and my favorite is the Navarrette 151 palm deck. The Skateboard Kid is rad too.

caps_sprntrl.jpg
No idea why I have these hats. Just more crap to have around. But the front one is a sample hat that Supernatural never ran. Sissi threw it at me one day on the way out of his office.

blender.jpg
Neil Blender was an idol of mine when I first started skating. A couple years ago I found a site selling his artwork so I bought this one. I got an email from Neil and I saved it. I also saved my check that he endorsed. I know, I'm a dork. I think this was $200.

P1010211.jpg
Random posters. I try to keep them all nice and flat.

stickers.jpg
Random stickers. I liked keeping stickers around to give to kids or whatever but the bin is running pretty low.

jersey1984.jpg
(left) This was the jersey I got for playing 'skate hockey' against Vallely, Chalmers and Rothmeyer for the NHL All Star game. I sucked up the joint but it was a lot of fun. (right) Another poster. This is an old 1984 poster when Nesser was on the team with Neil Heddings, Chilress, Hitz, lots of people.
