GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE

Image
It is with a heavy heart that I let you all know that Chairman Meow has left this world. He was senselessly taken yesterday by my drug dealing neighbor's pitbull. It was one of the most terrible things I've ever seen and I can't get the image out of my head. I've become a bit of a hermit in my old age and my two cats (Lopez and the Chairman) were not only roommates but they're my friends. And now my little guy is gone. It's real quiet around here. A pitbull should not be running free outside ever. Especially one that is vicious.

He was a wonderful cat. He had been playing with my first cat, Lopez, over in the neighbor's yard and the theory is that when the pitbull came out, the Chairman shoved Lopez out of the way and in the process was locked onto by the dog. For some reason that makes me feel better. I can't figure out who to blame for what happened or if I need to blame anyone at all. I feel so awful for not being there for him. I was his papa and I couldn't keep him safe. He was only a year old and he was dependant on me. I'm sorry Chairman. I'm sorry you died such a horrible death.

He weighed about fifteen pounds. He was a big fuckin' cat. He helped me rebuild the porch, paint, work on the bathroom, pretty much everything I've been doing he helped me with. The clumsy bastard broke more of my shit than I can count. But I always forgave him. Lopez is sitting in the window meowing for her friend. I realize it's just a cat but I honestly don't feel much difference between humans and animals. My mother was telling me last night that the reason she loves animals and old people is because they have no guile. After looking up what that word meant I agreed with her.

You're in a better place now Chairman. I'm sure by now you've met Yogurt, Birdo, Pooh Bear, Bob Dog, Blah, Ratzo, Chumley Jones, Chalkie, Cincinatti the Dancing Pig, and all the other friends that left my life far too early. Poor a little out for the Chairman tonight. He certainly would for you.
