INTERVIEW BY BRIAN PERRY 1/8/03
How did you get your gig at Consolidated?
um, it was around 1997 i think and my roommate at the time (billy kahn)
was rideing for consolidated and i think one time they sent an extra
board in his box for me to skate. so i thought i would send a thank you
letter and i drew a little picture along with it and a few days later
Moish (the dude that had done everything consolidated till me) called me
up and wanted permission to use the picture i drew for a board, so i
said YES. over the next year i did about 10 graphics for consolidated
then out of the blue i got a call saying that Moishwas leaving and could
i move to santa cruz and be the art director for consolidated, less than
a month later my wife Leah and i had all our stuff packed and we moved
to sunny santa cruz california. shweew.
Do you know how many people want your job?
3 people? but that's just a ruff guess, i bet it's more like 2.
As an artist, do you think the meaning behind your work has any
relevance to
its owner? Does it matter?
i dunno really, i mean i guess sometimes. i know i end up drawing and
painting a lot of really crummy things (both style and content) and most
of the time it's just cuz i like how it looks, not that any of it relates
to me in any way. i feel like a lot of the art i do is kinda negitive or
just wrong most of the time but i still do it anyhow and im sure people
think im some kind of psycho, but im just some normal dude that likes
long walks on the beach, rootbeer and bowling. you know.
Who is your favorite skater to watch (current and all time)?
current is a toss up between Seth McCallum and Izzy Forbes.
all time would have to be the Gonz for sure.
If everyone on the Consolidated team were to fight eachother, who would
win?
hands down Richard Paez. no question.
What local skaters did you look up to as a kid in Minnesota?
well i grew up in northren minnesota so the dudes i looked up i don't
think anyone from the mpls area would have ever heard of but guys like
Elvis Hanson, Ryan Novotny, A.J. Oneil, Rolf Hanson, Gene Roepke, the
McKinnons, Jason Beam, Cory Watson there were a bunch or super rad
skaters up there that nobody ever knew about. when i moved to
minneapolis i was stoked on how good Chad Benson was (is) and all the
dudes that skated the old FED.
Give me one reason not to move to California.
no winter is about the only real reason i can think of, if it were ever
possable i would doing all this consolidated stuff out of Minnesota.
BOO-YOWZA!!
